City of Westminster Requests Compliance with Plastic Bag Reduction Ordinance
Chapter 173, “Environmental Sustainability”, Article I, “Plastic Bags”, restricting the distribution of single-use plastic bags at certain business establishments in the City, took effect on July 1. 2021. In the period leading up to the effective date and in the short time since, the City has received numerous inquiries regarding the compliance of specific bags.
In order to reduce confusion and enhance compliance among businesses in the City, the Mayor and Common Council amended the ordinance to add clarity to the definition of “single use plastic carryout bags.”
The amended ordinance defines a single use plastic bag as a bag less than 3 mils thick that is provided by a business establishment to a customer for the purpose of transporting purchases. No other changes were made to the Ordinance.
A copy of the ordinance can be found on the City’s web site at www.WestminsterMD.gov. Questions may be directed to Executive Assistant Samantha Schlitzer at 410-848-5673 or SSchlitzer@WestGov.com. Thank you for being our partners and for keeping Westminster Clean and Green!
